Weathersfield Veterans Memorial Committee

Minutes

March 27, 2018

Present: Chip Cobb, Gloria Ballantine, Ernie & Cookie Shand, Edith Stillson, deForest & Patience Bearse, Jeff & Lisa Slade

Call meeting to order: Chip Cobb called meeting to order at 6:20 p.m.

Additions to Agenda: Chip asked to add set next meeting date to agenda.

Approve minutes: Jeff Slade made the motion to approve the minutes dated 10/10/17. Gloria Ballantine seconded the motion which passed without dissent.

Update on Educational Component at School: Chip said this was purchased through the Grant we received back in 2009. He said he was notified in October that the unit (which has been at the school for a few years now) was no longer working. After talking to the Town Manager and the Committee the consensus was to have the school salvage any part of it that they could and scrap the rest. The school did this and they received a grant to purchase a replacement.

New flags for Perkinsville and Ascutney Green: Chip said in November the flag at the Perkinsville Green was caught up in a tree and torn. He removed the flag and purchased new flags for both the Ascutney and Perkinsville Greens at a cost of $34.17. John & BJ Esty trimmed the tree and put a new rope on the pole in Perkinsville before the new flag was raised. Jeff Slade made the motion to reimburse Chip Cobb $34.17 for the purchase of two American Flags. Edith Stillson seconded the motion which passed unanimously.

Payment to Perkinsville Church for electricity: Chip said the $200 yearly fee we agreed on a few years ago was sent in 2016 but not since. Jeff Slade made the motion to remit payment to the Perkinsville Church for electricity for 2017 and 2018 for a total of $400, Gloria Ballantine seconded the motion. Chip made mention that he's sure the cost isn't close to $200. Gloria said she can find out because the bill for the Green is separate than the one for the Church. Motion passed unanimously.

Memorial Day 2018: Chip said Memorial Day is Monday May 28th this year and the ceremonies in the past have started at 11 am. He said Kalthleen Fellows has expressed interest in participating so they will present the colors. Music from the school is tentative at this time - the music teacher won't know until the beginning of May.

Lisa said she would take care of ordering the wreath and Edith would bring it with her on the 28th. Gloria Ballantine made the motion to spend no more than $175 for the wreath and programs. Jeff Slade seconded the motion which passed without dissent. Lisa will ask he first responders to place the wreath as they have in the past.

Chip will make the program and do the advertising, Lisa will print the programs. Cookie suggested asking Kathleen Fellows if she would like to be the guest speaker, Chip said he would email her.

The Bearse family was asked if they could provide the music, deForest said she would check with her daughter, Helen. (Before typing these minutes it has been confirmed that Helen Bearse will provide the music).

Due to the noise from the traffic it was suggested that the PA system be set up near the fence along High Street. Chip will ask BJ Esty to bring the PA system with her and set it up.

Next Meeting - Monday, May 21, 2018 at 6:15 at Martin Memorial Hall

Adjourn: Jeff Slade made the motion to adjourn. Gloria Ballantine seconded the motion which passed without dissent.
